GEAR UP-ST. LOUIS Students Trip to Washington D.C.

Eighteen rising tenth-grade students in the GEAR UP ST. LOUIS program, and their parents had the opportunity to go on an all-expense paid trip to the nation's capital July 18-24. While in Washington D.C. the group met with U.S. Representative Lacy Clay, visited three colleges(Bowie State University, George Washington University, and Howard University), and toured several historical monuments. The purpose of the trip was to expose parents and students to the college experience and raise their awareness and readiness for undergraduate programs.  Click here to view video of students in Washington, D.C.

Missouri Black Expo 2008

Missouri Black Expo in partnership with GEAR UP-ST. LOUIS presented the 3rd annual GEAR UP Student and Parent Leadership Summit on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at America's Center St. Louis. The objective of the summit was to provide: outstanding recommendations to GEAR UP parents about getting involved with their child's education; inspire and motivate students to apply for college after high school graduation; and lay the foundation for successful academic and personal growth.  

 

 


GEAR UP Summer Reading and Writing Seminar

The GEAR UP Summer Reading and Writing Seminar was designed to give a small group of interested students an opportunity to work in an intensive academic environment which included deadlines and assignments that closely resembled a college English course. The Summer Reading & Writing Seminar involved reading, writing, classroom presentations, and vocabulary-building.

Students chose a book to read, and every day were required to give a verbal summary of the chapters they read the day or night before class. Each of the students had an opportunity to hear summaries of everyone's book. At the end of the seminar, each student heard a summary of ten to fifteen books....read more

 

 

 

GEAR UP-ST. LOUIS Summer 2008 College Tours

In conjunction with the Summer University program, GEAR UP-ST.  LOUIS parents and students went on several college tours within the state of Missouri.  In total, ten college tours were completed this past summer to the following schools: University of Missouri-Columbia (3), University of Missouri-Kansas City (2), Lincoln University (2), Southeast Missouri State (2), and Missouri University of Science & Technology (formerly known as the University of Missouri-Rolla) (1)Parents and students enjoyed the experience and were appreciative of all the information they received while on these tours.
